Baby Born at Sheetz Celebrates First Birthday

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Preston Lee Manges celebrated his first birthday Thursday at the spot where he was born—a Sheetz parking lot. Outfitted in the gray Sheetz onesie the company sent him, the 1-year-old "Sheetz baby" grinned and slurped as he enjoyed his birthday treat: an orange slushy from the convenience store.

Preston, eager to make his debut last year, began to escape from the womb of his mother, Kirsten Manges, on Route 283 as they traveled from Mount Joy, Pa., to the Women and Babies Hospital. The baby was fully out as his father, Dan Manges, pulled into the Mount Joy Sheetz at 1455 E. Main St., at 8:18 p.m., LancasterOnline.com reported.

"I wasn't pushing or anything," Kirsten Manges recalled in the newspaper article. "[The doctor] said he would be fast, but they didn't say he would fall out."

To date, Preston’s delivery is the only birth to have ever taken place in a Sheetz parking lot, according to company administrative assistant April Reid.

Preston is unaware he amassed so much attention in his first year. He's progressing as a typical 1-year-old, playing with trains with his brother, Bradley, learning to walk and addressing his father and brother as "Da-Da" and "Bra-Bra," Kristen Manges said in the report. She's still working with him to say "Mama"—and then "Sheetz."

He was having a traditional birthday celebration with a family party Saturday, but Manges said Sheetz will continue to always be a part of Preston's birthdays.

"Every year, I'll stop by with him and pick something up—like a tradition," she said.

Manges told the newspaper she plans to let fate determine when she has her next child. But she and husband are hoping for a girl, and possibly a different birthplace.

"We might go for a Turkey Hill next time," she said. "Then, maybe I'll get their big dairy cow in my yard as my advertisement."
