Casey's Donates to Honor Flight Program
ANKENY, Iowa -- As many as 350 World War II veterans from Iowa will get to fly to Washington D.C., to see the new World War II Memorial, thanks to a donation from Casey's General Stores Inc., which gave $250,000 to Central Iowa Honor Flight -- enough money to charter a 747 jet for a day trip for the veterans to the nation's capital, the Des Moines Register reported.
The trip has not yet been scheduled, but will probably take place in late September or early October, and will be the fourth such trip organized by Jeff Ballenger, a Council Bluffs businessman. The donation from Casey's comes on the heels of a similar gift made to Honor Flight by Hy-Vee. Hundreds of veterans took that trip earlier this month, according to the report.
"You could just tell, they have a real heart for veterans," Ballenger said of Casey's management as he announced the gift Tuesday morning outside Casey's headquarters in Ankeny in the report.
