McDonald's Sees Global Sales Rise 2.2 Percent in August

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- McDonald's Corp. saw its global comparable sales rise 2.2 percent in August, with U.S. sales up slightly.

U.S. sales rose 1.7 percent in August, compared to the 3.5-percent lift experienced by McDonald's European stores and the 0.5-percent sales decline in it Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa stores, the company said.

"Our commitment to providing customers with menu variety, value and convenience is delivering sustained global comparable sales growth despite the current economic environment, " CEO Jim Skinner said in a statement. "Our system remains aligned behind providing great service to each of the 58 million customers who visit us daily."

In the United States, McDonald's new premium Angus Third Pounders and McCafe espresso-based coffees contributed to the sales increase, the company said.

In Europe, the company's tiered menu approach, which includes locally relevant limited-time food offerings, plus popular marketing tie-ins, helped drive comparable sales up.

McDonald's has more than 32,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. About 80 percent of McDonald's restaurants worldwide are owned and operated by franchisees.
