7-Eleven, Virginia Retailers Raise $200,000 for Muscular Dystrophy
RICHMOND, Va. -- Retailers including 7-Eleven, Lowe's, Kroger, and more helped raise more than $200,000 recently for the central Virginia division of the Muscular Distrophy Association, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.
Last year, sales of the $1 and $5 shamrocks for the local campaign raised $146,109. The national shamrock campaign raised more than $19 million this year, surpassing last year's total of $18.9 million.
Convenience store chain 7-Eleven raised $26,469 for the campaign. Lowe's collected $95,823, while Kroger reached the $30,266 mark. Restaurants Hardee's and Shoney's raised $13,902 and $7,498, respectively, the report stated.
The funds support MDA research and more than 200 clinics, including the VCU Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Richmond, the newspaper reported. In addition, the campaign funds camping trips for 55 area children with neuromuscular diseases to the barrier-free MDA summer camp at the Airfield Conference Center's 4-H facility in Wakefield, Va.
"This is a very big campaign for MDA," Andrea Shaver, executive director of the central Virginia office, told the Times-Dispatch. "It's almost 20 percent of the budget. Our budget this year is $1.1 million. The money stays in the local area. It benefits our local families, the 2,100 families [with muscular dystrophy] in central Virginia."
