BP announced in November 2007 its intention to sell all company-owned and -operated retail sites over a two year period. The company is in the final stages of that plan, with just 38 remaining company-owned c-stores, down from more than 800 in 2008. The parent company of the ampm convenience store chain would probably like to forget 2010 following the ecological disaster caused by the blown oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. BP-branded sales were down between 7 percent and 10 percent during the spill, according to the company, which promised to focus on providing a greater level of commitment and support to its fuel marketers.
