C-store Retailers Help Customers Beat the Heat

NEW YORK -- Convenience store retailers are getting into the spirit of summer with promotions and giveaways specifically tailored to help customers beat the heat.

Over the July 4th holiday weekend, Stripes convenience stores handed out hundreds of beach umbrellas, beach towels and sand pails, along with 4,000 coupons for free bags of ice, to beachgoers at South Padre Island, Texas. The convenience store chain also brought in local "The Sandcastle Wizard" to entertain, area television station KGBT-TV reported.

The July 4th extravaganza kicks off a summer of giveaways for Stripes, the report stated.

Meanwhile, Circle K's Midwest division, which encompasses roughly 400 stores in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri, is promoting its private label Polar Pop beverages this summer in a "Win Cold Cash" sweepstakes. Running from May 6, to Aug. 4, the sweepstakes will award one $10,000 grand prize and 10 monthly prizes of $50 Polar Pop gift cards in June, July and August, according to a report by the In-Store Marketing Institute.

The promotion is communicated on window clings, counter displays and pump toppers, along with billboards in some markets. Customers can enter by mail via tearpad forms on counter displays, online or by text message, according to the report.

Circle K Midwest division’s Web site is also highlighting special offers for two-liter bottles of PepsiCo's Pepsi and Dr Pepper Snapple Group's 7UP for $1.25; two Kraft Oscar Mayer hot dogs for $2; and 20-packs of Nestle Pure Life water for $3.49. The specials are also promoted at stores with cooler clings and pump toppers.
