However, Sheetz loyal customers don't have to wait for their tasty treat. The Altoona, Pa.-based chain's offer of a free doughnut with the purchase of any drink with a Sheetz loyalty card was good a day early, June 2.

And naturally, Dunkin' Donuts is getting in on the action. Customers can get a free classic doughnut with the purchase of any beverage on June 3. The promotion begins when customers' local stores open.

A classic doughnut includes glazed; strawberry frosted with rainbow sprinkles; chocolate frosted with rainbow sprinkles; vanilla frosted with rainbow sprinkles; jelly; old fashioned; glazed chocolate cake and Boston Kreme, according to the Canton, Mass.-based quick-service restaurant chain.

Another doughnut giant, Krispy Kreme is also serving up a deal for its customers. The Winston-Salem, N.C.-based company is offering customers a free treat with a beverage purchase.

According to NationalDayCalendar.com, National Doughnut Day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served the doughnuts to soldiers in World War I. This day began as a fundraiser for Chicago's Salvation Army, with the goal to help the needy during the Great Depression.
