Corner Store Introduces New Products, Promotion for Summer


SAN ANTONIO - The Corner Store chain is getting ready for summer by adding new sweet and savory snacks to its expanding menu of fresh-made items. Customers can now choose from a German Chocolate Whoopie Pie or an Eckrich Applewood Smoked Sausage with Monterey Cheese roller grill item.

"With families headed out on road trips this summer, we wanted to kick up our offerings and add more complex flavors to some of our customers' favorite snacks," said Hal Adams, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for CST Brands Inc., parent company of Corner Stores. "This fits right in with our strategic plans to continue to increase our fresh offerings."

Corner Stores launched the German Chocolate Whoopie Pie, which retails for 99 cents each or three for $2.49, after it won a taste test at a trade show. Meanwhile, the Applewood Smoked Sausage with Monterey Cheese, which retails for $1.59 each ($1.39 in Arizona) or two for $2, are available on Corner Store roller grills through an exclusive partnership with the Eckrich brand of meats. Both items are available for a limited time while supplies last.

"Sweet and spicy is a very popular combination right now," Adams said. "The Applewood lends a nice sweetness that works beautifully with the peppery heat from the Monterey cheese."

The convenience store chain first introduced chocolate and vanilla Whoopie Pies under its signature Fresh Choices label two years ago, and sold 1.3 million of them in 2012. Items on the label are baked fresh in stores and also include kolaches made with sweet bread, cookies, doughnuts, and breakfast tacos on homemade tortillas.

This summer, the Corner Store chain is also giving away $1,000 in gift cards every day from June 4 through Sept. 2 during its $1K-A-Day 4U Summer Sweepstakes. Customers can enter to win daily with a 44-ounce Flavors2Go fountain drink or a 20-ounce bottle of a Coca-Cola product.

Unique entry codes and entry instructions can be found under pull tabs on the fountain drinks and under the caps of the Coca-Cola bottles. Customers aged 18-plus can enter up to seven of these codes daily at Each daily drawing is based on that day's entries.

"With summer right around the corner, we are all bracing for the heat and our customers will be reaching for ice-cold drinks from the cooler or fountain machine," said Adams. "What could be better than grabbing your favorite thirst-quencher and finding out you just won $1,000 in gift cards?"

Corner Store gift cards can be used for gasoline purchases, as well as in-store merchandise. The three-month promotion is expected to reach 5.3 million consumers, the company stated.
