CSNews Exclusive: Gulf Oil Grows in Virginia

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. and FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Gulf Oil continued its growth in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S., as it signed a branded distributor partnership with Anderson Oil Co.

As part of the agreement, Anderson Oil will immediately rebrand more than 24 retail motor fuel outlets in the Greater Fredericksburg and Richmond areas to the Gulf brand and Gulf Sunrise image package, from Chevron, Texaco and Pure brands, according to Gulf Oil.

"My family has fond memories of the Gulf brand," Mark Anderson, president/owner of Anderson Oil, said in a statement. "Gulf is a company that is dedicated to value and loyalty, and we are excited to rejoin the family."

This deal marks the first time since 1986 that a Gulf Oil branded gas station will operate in this market. Gulf Oil officially re-entered Virginia in April when Milo C. Cockerham Inc. signed branded distributor agreements with the company. The deal with Anderson is also the latest step in the national expansion of the Gulf Oil brand, which began January when the company acquired the full brand rights from Chevron, as well as the ability to market the brand nationwide. Gulf Oil identified the Mid-Atlantic U.S. as its first expansion target, as Chevron had previously announced a withdrawal from markets in that area.

"One of the most gratifying elements of Gulf's geographic expansion continues to be learning about the long history and legacy that Gulf shared with many of our re-established branded partners," Gulf Oil senior vice president and chief sales and marketing officer Rick Dery said in a statement. "By the end of my first meeting with Mark Anderson, during which I learned of Anderson Oil's historical ties to Gulf, it was as if I had known him and his family's business for decades."

Since Jan. 12, 2010, when Gulf Oil acquired the title and rights to the Gulf brand from Chevron, Gulf Oil has added more than 300 new branded sites to its network, Dery added.

"I am extremely proud of both our field team and our office support team to have accomplished so much in a short amount of time," Gulf Oil president and COO, Ron Sabia, said in a statement. "Our continued growth in the Old Dominion state reinforces Gulf's long-term commitment to the Mid-Atlantic region. With more than 5 million drivers in Virginia, we remain committed to offering the best high-quality service to the driving public and strive to be the premium gasoline retailer nationwide."
