<i>CSNews</i> Expands Best New Products Awards Contest

NEW YORK -- NBC News' "Today Show" food trends editor and correspondent Phil Lempert will supervise the judging for the 12th annual Convenience Store News/Supermarket Guru Best New Products Awards.

Designed to honor the top new products introduced to the convenience channel in the past year, the 2008 Best New Products Awards contest has been expanded to include 14 product categories, with new criteria that rates the submitted entries on the basis of taste, value, convenience, healthfulness, quality ingredients, preparation requirements, appearance and packaging.
Known as The Supermarket Guru, Lempert is a distinguished author and speaker who alerts customers and business leaders to impending corporate and consumer trends, and empowers them to make educated purchasing and marketing decisions.

As one of America's leading consumer trend-watchers and analysts, Lempert is recognized on television, radio and in print. He makes monthly appearances on ABC's "The View," and has appeared numerous times on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," "20/20," CNN, CNBC, Discovery Health and MSNBC, as well as on local television morning and news programs throughout the country.

Lempert is also a monthly columnist for Progressive Grocer magazine (writing the "Consumer Insight" column) and Gourmet Retailer magazine, both sister brands of Convenience Store News.

Entries will be judged in the following categories:
• Beer/malt beverages
• Wine & liquor
• Carbonated soft drinks
• Non-carbonated soft drinks
• Ice cream and frozen novelties
• Foodservice items
• Candy & confectionery
• Packaged sweet snacks
• Tobacco products
• Health & beauty care
• Edible grocery
• Other miscellaneous.

All entries must be goods designed for resale to consumers. No store equipment or technology is eligible. The product must have been introduced to the convenience store market between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008. Winners will receive a crystal engraved award, coverage in CSNews' NACS Show Daily and in the Dec. 8, post-NACS Show issue of CSNews. Winners may also use the 2008 Best New Product Award logo in all their future promotion materials. Entry deadline is Aug. 15.
