Discontinued Phones Help Victims of Abuse
Odessa, Texas -- Southwest Convenience Stores, the licensee for 7-Eleven stores throughout west Texas and New Mexico, donated 208 discontinued Trac phones to Safe Place of the Permian Basin, a support system for victims of domestic violence.
The gift, valued at approximately $20,000, will be given to victims so they can contact Safe Place or call 911 in case of an emergency.
Monica Windham, an advocate for Safe Place, said "We're always needing to give our ladies some security. We can give them a phone to have, so if they need emergency assistance, they have it."
Safe Place is for women and children who have been a victim of some form of abuse, whether it is physical, emotional or verbal.
Andy Pochatko, vice president of operations for Southwest Convenience Stores, said "It's obvious they needed a means of communication, nothing is more scary than feeling alone, especially when you're in danger."
