ExxonMobil Green Team Underway

DALLAS -- The ExxonMobil Green Team kicked off its 28th year in operation here by creating a learning area around a large pecan tree within the Great Trinity Forest, for use by summer camps and classes taught through the Trinity River Audubon Center.

The Green Team is one of ExxonMobil’s signature community programs and is designed to provide work experience and educational opportunities for Dallas-area high school students from low- to moderate-income families, the ExxonMobil Foundation stated. The Green Team places students with local nonprofits for eight weeks, where they work in teams on environmental and conservation projects. In addition, students attend classes in career exploration, leadership development and environmental engineering.

"While many high school students are taking the summer off, the Green Team members will be completing a professional internship, attending college-level courses and learning how to positively impact their community," Truman Bell, senior program officer for education and diversity for the ExxonMobil Foundation, said in a statement. "We are proud of the commitment they’ve made to themselves through this program, and eager to see the great strides they will make during the next eight weeks."

The ExxonMobil Green Team is administered by the Volunteer Center of North Texas, with a grant of more than $230,000 from ExxonMobil. The funds go toward student salaries and administration expenses, the company stated.

Since its launch in 1981, ExxonMobil has invested more than $6.3 million in the Dallas program, reaching approximately 3,400 students, according to the company.

"Programs such as the ExxonMobil Green Team are unique, because they equally impact the students and agencies involved," John Withers, board chair, Volunteer Center of North Texas, said in a statement. "We are proud to partner with ExxonMobil as this program enters its 28th year, to provide additional resources to outstanding nonprofits and continue making a difference in the lives of Dallas’ young people."

The ExxonMobil Green Team is also in operation in Torrance, Calif.; Chalmette, La.; Clinton, N.J.; Paulsboro, N.J.; Beaumont, Dallas and Houston, Texas; and, Arlington, Va.
