Fresh & Easy Expands to the Bay Area of San Francisco
BAYVIEW, Calif. -- Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market format is entering the Bay area with a store here, the San Francisco Business Times reported.
The store will take up approximately 15,000 square feet at the base of a 360-unit condo project by Goldman Sachs Urban Investment Group (UIG) and Noteware Development, the report stated. The site is a former Coca-Cola plant, and is located directly across from a light rail station.
Tesco and UIG planned to publicize the store with Mayor Gavin Newsom at a groundbreaking today, the report stated.
The area has struggled to attract and retain grocers that sell fresh produce and healthy food, according to the Business Times. A recent survey by the Southeast Sector Food Access Working Group found that more than half of respondents left the neighborhood to shop for groceries, the report stated.
"Obviously, this is a big deal because of the neighborhood," Brendan Wonnacott, a spokesman for Fresh & Easy, told the Business Times.
