Giant Eagle Offers foodperks! Discounts With GetGo Gas

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Shoppers at Giant Eagle get discounts on gas from food purchases, but now they can save on groceries based on gas with the supermarket chain’s new foodperks! program, at stores in Pittsburgh, Johnstown and Altoona Pa., as well as Morgantown, W.Va., according to a report in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.

The company tested the Columbus, Ohio, area in recent months, and for every 10 gallons of gas purchased at a Giant Eagle GetGo station, customers with the chain's Advantage cards get a 1 percent discount on a grocery purchase, according to the report.

Discounts can be saved up for a maximum 20 percent off a single purchase, so customers spending $300 at the supermarket could save $60, the Pittsburgh Tribune stated. Also, additional earned discounts beyond the 20 percent, can be saved for later.

The company is encouraging shoppers to save up discounts for big shopping trips similar to consumers in the test in Ohio, spokesman Rob Borella said in the newspaper report. "The economy is still forcing customers to make some difficult decisions on food and fuel," he said.

Foodperks! is available at 120 supermarkets and 87 GetGo stations, and should launch in the rest of the chain in coming months, and approximately 3.8 million households have Advantage cards, the report stated, and the program has no effect on the existing fuelperks! program introduced five years ago.

Even if a customer uses fuelperks! to get a free fillup on gas, those gallons pumped will count toward grocery perks, the report stated. Fuelperks! marks down each gallon of gas by 10 cents for every $50 spent at Giant Eagle grocery or convenience stores, while with the foodperks! program any gas purchase that doesn't reach the next 10-gallon level will count later. Fore example, buying 17 gallons earns a 1 percent discount, and the other seven gallons recorded toward the next 10-gallon threshold, the report stated.
