Giant Industries Shuts Down Refinery

SCOTTSDALE Ariz. -- A fire occurred in a heater used in one of two units that produces ultra low sulfur diesel, causing Giant Industries' 20,800-barrel-capacity Ciniza refinery, located near Gallup, N.M., to shut down, according to a company statement.

As a result, all of the refinery's units have been temporarily shut down. Giant is currently evaluating the time it will take to repair the damaged heater unit and restart the crude oil unit, the catalytic cracker and the other areas that were not damaged by the fire.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and contained the fire. There were no injuries, the company stated. Giant Industries, headquartered in Scottsdale, Ariz., refines and markets petroleum products and operates a chain of retail service and convenience stores in New Mexico, Colorado and Arizona.
