Global Partners Mourns Loss of Chairman Alfred Slifka

WALTHAM, Mass. – Alfred A. “Fred” Slifka, chairman of the board of directors of Global Partners LP and its general partner, Global GP LLC, died March 9 at his home in Boston. He was 81.

“Fred contributed immense leadership and integrity to Global Partners and the New England fuel industry over a career that spanned more than 60 years,” said Edward Faneuil, the partnership’s executive vice president and general counsel. “His vision, insight and experience were critical in helping to guide and grow the company."

Slifka began working in the oil industry in 1948 for Slifky’s Reliable Oil Co., the business his father Abraham started during the Depression. He and his brother Richard transformed the business into one of New England’s largest wholesalers of distillates, gasoline, residual oil and bunker oil during the 1950s and '60s.

Global Partners, a publicly traded master limited partnership, completed its initial public offering and listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005. Today, the logistics and marketing company owns, controls or has access to one of the largest terminal networks of refined petroleum products and renewable fuels in the Northeast, and is one of the largest distributors of gasoline, distillates, residual oil and renewable fuels to wholesalers, retailers and commercial customers in New England and New York.

Global Partners is also one of the largest independent owners, suppliers and operators of gas stations and convenience stores, with a portfolio of roughly 900 locations primarily in the Northeast.

In addition to his professional work, Slifka dedicated his time to numerous charitable organizations, including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Boston Children’s Hospital and Hebrew SeniorLife.

He is survived by his wife Gilda, their three children, his brother and seven grandchildren.

Slifka’s brother Richard, board vice chairman since March 2005, will succeed him as chairman.
