Gulf Oil Enters Maryland

CUMBERLAND, Md. and FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- The Gulf Oil brand returned to Maryland this week through a branded distributor partnership between the fuel wholesaler and Bedford Valley Petroleum.

As part of the deal, Bedford Valley Petroleum will rebrand nine retail motor fuel outlets in Pennsylvania and Maryland to the new Gulf "Sunrise" image. Before this, Gulf has supplied Maryland and Virginia with unbranded product on a consistent basis for several years, according to Gulf Oil President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Sabia.

"We are excited to be able to bring the Gulf family to Maryland and build upon its strong reputation," Bob Salathe III, president of Bedford Valley Petroleum, said in a statement. "Gulf is a natural partner for us and this is just the beginning for the Gulf brand in the Mid-Atlantic region."

CSNews Online reported in January that Gulf Oil acquired all title and interests to the "Gulf" brand from Chevron U.S.A. Inc., and now controls the right to market the brand throughout the United States and its territories. Since the expansion plans were unveiled, Gulf has secured terminal space in 30 additional terminals in seven states throughout the Southeast.

"Our expansion story continues," Gulf Oil Senior Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Rick Dery said in a statement. "The enthusiasm on behalf of branded distributors to be part of the resurgence of Gulf in these markets continues to grow. We are thrilled that we will soon be able to serve Maryland's driving public with Bedford Valley Petroleum."

Sabia added: "We also have a long history of purchasing product from Gulf coast refineries and shipping this product via pipeline through the Southeast into New York harbor. Our supply staff has done an extraordinary job at securing additional terminal space and we are well positioned to service the dynamic supply requirements of branded distributors in Maryland and throughout the Southeast. Gulf has enjoyed unparalleled branded growth in the last two years, and we are focused and committed to the same level of growth in these new markets."
