A Healthier El Monterey

Ruiz Foods announced that is has completed the process of removing trans fat from all El Monterey brand products sold to retail, foodservice, club, convenience store and vending channels.

New trans fat-free products include burritos, taquitos, chimichangas, quesadillas, tornados, soft tacos, cruncheros, Mexican grill and enchiladas.

"The Ruiz commitment to quality food that tastes good is an industry benchmark," said Bryce Ruiz, President and COO of the Dinuba, Calif.-based company. "So, as increased scientific data confirmed the benefit of zero trans fat products, it was a natural initiative for us to implement in keeping with the latest dietary guidelines as consumers strive to make more informed food choices."

Both El Monterey burritos and taquitos are made with tortillas fresh from the Ruiz bakery. They are then filled with robust and flavorful ingredients, real cheese and chunks of chicken or shredded steak, the company said. El Monterey has the top four burritos/chimichanga SKUs and the top two flour taquitos SKUs in the frozen Mexican food category in the United States, according to IRI data for the 52 weeks ending January 29, 2006.
