International News: Tesco to Test Subway
Sandwich chain Subway will open three trial concessions in Tesco Express stores in the United Kingdom, according to The Grocer. The test, due to start next month, will take place in three Express stores in the north Midlands and south of England.
Tesco plans to open its first stores in the United States in 2007. The new U.S. stores will be modeled on, but not exact duplicates of its Express convenience stores in the U.K. Averaging between 10,000 and 12,000 square feet, with parking for 70 cars and serving a local population of 15,000 people, the new California stores are expected to be larger than Express stores, however. Since Tesco's Express stores average only about 3,000 square feet, the new stores will represent a unique vision of a convenience/grocery store hybrid.
