Kum & Go Grows in 2009

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Kum & Go LC, the 50-year-old convenience store chain based here, added 21 new stores this year, bringing its total store count to more than 430 at the end of 2009.

The new stores, which opened in six states, have been constructed with an eye on environmental efficiency and the intent to fit into the communities they serve. They include the first Silver LEED certified store in the Midwest, according to John Feldman, vice president of construction for Kum & Go. LEED certification is an internationally recognized standard for measuring building sustainability.

"We have seen remarkable growth this year with 21 new stores opening in six different states," Kyle J. Krause, Kum & Go's president and CEO, said in a statement. "Several of our new stores are in areas we did not previously have stores. We are excited to join their communities as we continue our commitment of serving our customers."

Each new store brought roughly 15-20 new associate jobs to their communities.
As part of Kum & Go's commitment to developing environmentally friendly building and operating practices, the majority of new stores are equipped with heavily insulated glass, LED cooler door lights, sun reflecting roofs and energy-efficient heating/air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

"While we have been busy building new stores we have also improved the buildings we construct," said Feldman. "This year we built the first Silver LEED certified store in the Midwest. We look forward to incorporating environmental features into new construction next year."

Vice President of Real Estate Niki DePhllips added: "Looking to 2010, we are excited about the possibility for more growth and construction. We have been receiving very positive feedback from customers in our new stores and are looking to expand the areas we serve next year."

Stores opened in 2009 include Iowa locations in Grinnell, North Liberty, Norwalk, Riverside and Sioux City. Kum & Go achieved a significantly expanded presence in Colorado with stores in Brighton, Dacono, De Beque, Granby, Idaho Springs, Longmont and Loveland. In Arkansas two stores were opened in Bentonville and one in Lowell. Locations in Oklahoma included Broken Arrow, Coweta and Lone Chimney. New Missouri stores included Neosho and Springfield, and a store was opened in Sioux Falls, S.D.
