Nolan Tabbed as Murphy Oil Chairman

EL DORADO, Ark. -- Murphy Oil Corp., an independent refiner and operator of more than 150 gas stations at Wal-Mart stores throughout the Southeast, yesterday elected William Nolan its new chairman of the board. The appointment is effective immediately.

Nolan, a lawyer in private practice and Murphy board member since 1977, will replace R. Madison Murphy, who will devote more time to matters related to the estate of his late father, Charles Murphy, the founder of Murphy Oil, who died in March.

Madison Murphy will remain on the board of directors of the company, which is based in El Dorado, Ark.

Nolan received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1964. After graduation, he worked in Murphy's Law Department until 1969 when he left to found the Nolan and Alderson law firm where he is a partner. He is also president of Noalmark Broadcasting Corp., which owns radio stations in Arkansas and New Mexico.
