STAMFORD, Conn. -- Diageo has promoted James Thompson, senior vice president of marketing for the Smirnoff and Captain Morgan brands, to president, global and North American marketing for these brands.

"James Thompson plays a critical role in the success of two of our most important brands -- Captain Morgan and Smirnoff -- and we are delighted that he will use his North American expertise to continue to build these brands globally," said Mark Waller, executive vice president, consumer strategy and marketing.

In Thompson's expanded role, he will have responsibility for leading these two global priority brands in the 180 markets around the world in which Diageo operates, while continuing to oversee the brands in North America, Diageo's largest market.
