Sheetz Expands its Reach

Altoona, Pa. -- Sheetz, the 329-unit c-store chain based here, finalized several real estate deals Monday and began demolition and preliminary site preparations on a new site, located at the intersection of Route 120 and S. Michael Street, in St. Marys, Pa. Construction of the new store will begin in spring 2007.

The company has long wanted to expand into St. Marys. "We are very excited to come to St. Marys," said Joe S. Sheetz, executive vice president of store development. "We have very loyal customers in the St. Marys area so we're happy we can serve them in their hometown."

The 4,700 square-foot brick building will resemble the newer style of stores the company has been building since 2004. Along with the store construction, roadways and intersections will be improved. The future Sheetz will be the 15th location in Elk, Jefferson and Clearfield Counties. Joanne Bennett, Sheetz district manager, will oversee operations of the store.

Sheetz representatives worked with Governor Ed Rendell's office; Dave Green, the city manager; and Warren Stewart, of the St. Marys Redevelopment Authority. "This process could not have been successful without the assistance of the governor's office and these city officials," said real estate attorney John Kachur for Sheetz. "We were able to acquire the necessary property to build there and it's been a pleasure doing business in that part of the state."

Sheetz has more than 10,000 employees throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. It reported more than $3.4 billion in revenue for 2005. The company ranks 87th on the Forbes list of largest private companies in 2006 and is No. 24 on the CSN Top 100 list of c-store chains. It also has been named one of the best places to work in both Ohio and Pennsylvania for 2006.
