Sheetz Sees Growth in Rocky Mount, N.C.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Regional convenience store chain Sheetz Inc. is opening two new locations in Rocky Mount in the coming months as part of its expansion in eastern North Carolina, the Rocky Mount Telegram reported.

A Sheetz store that is under construction on two and one-half acres that wrap around a Rite Aid pharmacy at Benvenue and Goldrock Roads, is slated to open June 10. A second Sheetz is under construction at Bishop Road and North Wesleyan Boulevard across from North Carolina Wesleyan College. It is expected to open later this summer.

The new stores, which will bring Sheetz's number of company outlets in North Carolina to 27, are part of its plans to add new stores between Statesville and Greenville.

"I can tell you we are still growing, and we are trying to work hard [to build new stores] between Statesville and Greenville," Jamie Gerhart, who works for the retailer's development division in Raleigh, N.C., said in the newspaper report.

Sheetz's eastward expansion includes stores that opened in Greenville, with the first opening in 2006. A new one opened in February 2007, in Wilson.

Sheetz has been interested in expanding into Rocky Mount for some time, according to Gerhart. "Geographically, it fits into where we currently operate. We've looked at Rocky Mount from the very beginning of our expansion into North Carolina," he said. "Sometimes, it takes longer to find a site works for both parties."

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz is a chain of convenience stores owned by the Sheetz family. Stores are in North Carolina, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Today, Sheetz operates more than 365 locations and employs more than 13,000 people.
