Spinx VP Passes Away

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Richard Phipps, vice president of real estate for The Spinx Co. and a 25-year veteran of the convenience store company, passed away Feb. 5, at the age of 75.

Phipps moved to Greenville, S.C. to join Spinx in 1985, bringing with him 30-plus years of petroleum marketing experience from Standard Oil of California (Chevron). His expertise and guidance led Spinx to grow from 15 locations to the 125 stores it serves today.

"Words can't begin to describe what Richard has meant to his family, to his company, or to the many people whose lives he has touched," The Spinx Co. said in a statement released yesterday. "In his professional life, Richard was respected by his peers and revered by his co-workers. He continued to have fun working into his 70s and remained a valuable contributor, mentor and motivator to everyone at Spinx."

According to the company's Web site, Phipps received a bachelor's degree from the University of California, and held numerous positions with Spinx before becoming vice president of real estate. His main responsibilities included site development under the Enigma Corp., a separate company that handles "the dirt" for Spinx. He also managed all of the company's real estate activity, including new site selection, purchasing and sales.

In his free time, Phipps enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his family. He loved traveling and the arts, especially Peace Center events with his wife, Donna.

"Richard enjoyed enriching the lives of others and was truly in his element in Greenville," Spinx stated. "He was a man of honor who stuck to his commitments. He was a gentleman, a teammate, coach and dear, dear friend to many. Richard was a great man whose legacy to Spinx lives on in the many quality character traits he taught us."
