Stewarts Ice Cream Race Yields Sweet Victories in Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS -- For those in the know, August in Saratoga means one thing: racing. While horses are usually the featured attraction, Stewarts annual Ice Cream Race draws those interested in sweet success.
"We have done this event for a number of years and it draws a huge crowd with people cheering on participants," Tom Mailey, a spokesman for Stewart’s, told CSNews Online.
Mailey, who served as the event’s emcee, said the contest had three categories: 6- to 12-year-olds, 13- to 17-year-olds, and 18 and older. "The kids have a great time. It’s all about the atmosphere," Mailey told CSNews Online.
Among winners was Christina Rosenberger, 17, who secured the 13 to 17 division. She told The Saratgoian that a "brain freeze" did not slow her down.
"I have braces, so my mouth was freezing," she told the paper. "I just tried to keep my head tilted back, so the ice cream wouldn’t touch my teeth."
Winners in the 6 to 17 age group won 12 gift certificates for a half-gallon of Stewart’s ice cream, while winners in the 18 and older age group won 28 gift certificates, Mailey noted.
As the company does each year, it launched a special flavor to coincide with the event. "This year we featured 'Finish Line Fudge,'" Mailey said, adding that the mocha fudge-swirled ice cream is made and distributed one time so customers have to strike while they can.
"This year’s flavor is really good," Mailey told CSNews Online, adding that the event was a great success.
