Thorntons Provides Gas Price Alert Via Facebook

LOUISEVILLE, Ky. -- Facebook friends of Thorntons, the Louisville, Ky.-based convenience store chain with 162 stores in Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee, received a heads up from the retailer Monday morning to save money on gas.

In a posting at around 11 a.m. that morning, fans of the retailers saw this message from the retailer:
"Gas Alert for our friends on Facebook! Wholesale Gas prices increased overnight. Most of our competitors have already increased their pump prices. We will wait until 1:00 p.m. to increase so that you can fill up and save at Thorntons. Thank you for being a Thorntons fan!"

Thorntons is an active user of social networking site Facebook to promote its brand and products to the online community. Yesterday, the chain was offering a $50 Thorntons gift card to a "fan of the month" who posted a picture of him or herself on Thorntons Facebook "wall" with one of the chain's signature beverages. The person getting the most "likes" mentions from fans wins the gift card.

Several convenience store chains are active users of Facebook, including Quick Chek, RaceTrac, Wawa and others.
