Thorntons Sells Connecticut Stores

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Thorntons Inc., operator of 161 convenience stores across five states in the Midwest and Southern U.S., sold its four Connecticut c-store locations to Framingham, Mass-based Cumberland Farms.

Thorntons sold these locations to better align with its overall business plan and core operations in the Midwest and South, the company said in a statement, adding it continues to expand and build in its current markets. A call to Thorntons for more information was unreturned by press time.

Cumberland Farms spokeswoman Christen Graham verified the sale and told CSNews Online the sites will be rebranded, but a timeline and more information was not available by press time.

Thorntons also opened six new c-stores in December 2009, four of which are located in Nashville, Tenn., expanding the market to 10 locations in two and one-half years. The other two new stores opened in the Chicago suburb of East Dundee, Ill., and in Champaign, Ill., as reported earlier this month by CSNews Online.

The new stores feature high-quality foods, such as fresh sandwiches, salads, fruit and more. The new stores also feature a redesigned look with a greater focus on fresh food and refreshments, including a roller grill bar design that offers hot dogs, corndogs and more, the company stated.

As a result of this sale, Thorntons operates stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
