Ultramar Foundation Donates $400,000 to Charities

MONTREAL, Quebec -- A subsidiary of Valero Energy Corp., Ultramar Ltd., refiner and marketer of fuels to more than 1,000 convenience stores, saw its charitable arm, the Ultramar Foundation, distribute $400,000 to 70 children's charities located in the areas where the company operates, the company stated.

"We created the Ultramar Foundation for the purpose of helping organizations that are dedicated to the well being of individuals and the development of the community," Jean Bernier, president of Ultramar, said in a statement.

For the third time, the company organized a golf tournament that raised funds to benefit children's charities with the help of the company's partners and suppliers, he said. This year's tournament took place on Aug. 20, at the Saint-Raphael Golf Club on Ile Bizard, and raised $400,000, said Bernier, adding that in the three years of its existence, the golf outing has raised more than $1 million.

The charities that received funds offer a variety of services -- including safe shelters for abused children, the distribution of breakfasts, warm meals, school supplies and homework assistance to disadvantaged children, support for prenatal health care and the purchase of medical equipment for hospitals providing care for sick or handicapped children, the company stated.

"Thanks to our employees' involvement and generous support from our suppliers and business partners, we are able to come to the assistance of hundreds of children who are disadvantaged or who experience difficult situations in Eastern Canada," said Bernier. "We are very proud to support so many worthy causes. In addition, since the beneficiaries were chosen by our employees, these donations have a very special significance."
