Valero Fined for Refinery Emissions
SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) last week fined refining and marketing company Valero Energy Corp., based here, $119,149 for air emissions at the company's Texas City refinery in 2006, reported the San Antonio Express-News.
TCEQ cited 12 different incidents at the plant, located in Galveston County, where sulfur dioxide or other volatile organic compounds were released into the atmosphere, the report stated. Regulators told the newspaper the emissions could have been prevented by good operating practices.
Half of the fine will be used to help local school districts and transit agencies replace or retrofit diesel buses to reduce emissions, according to the TCEQ.
