7-Eleven Adds Vegan Element to Its Food

DALLAS — 7-Eleven Inc. is mixing vegan into its foodservice program.

Fortune magazine reported that the convenience store retailer has begun using an eggless, vegan mayonnaise made with pea protein called Just Mayo. The report cites full-page advertisements taken out by Just Mayo maker Hampton Creek that recently ran in The New York Times.

In addition to the ads,  Hampton Creek CEO Josh Tetrick tweeted last month: "I'm insanely proud of this: All of @7eleven US switched to using #justmayo by @hamptoncreek. (largest convenience store in the world) – Josh."

Hampton Creek is the startup behind Just Mayo.

The change affects 7-Eleven's foodservice program. It will still sell other jars of mayo, but will be using the eggless mayo in the food it prepares, according to the report.

A 7-Eleven email response to Fortune said the company has not issued any information on this topic.

The move is not out of the realm for 7-Eleven. In 2011, following a pilot program in several New York City stores, the retailer expanded the availability of ready-made vegan meals to locations in Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey, as CSNews Online previously reported.

Dallas-based 7-Eleven operates, franchises or licenses nearly 10,500 convenience stores in North America.
