7-Eleven Earns Accolade for Energy Efficiency

IRVING, Texas — 7-Eleven Inc., the largest chain in the convenience retailing industry, was recently awarded the Alliance to Save Energy "Built Environment" award.

The Alliance to Save Energy recognized the Irving-based retailer for its commitment to reducing energy consumption, as well as for improving efficiency at its U.S. stores.

Over the last seven years, 7-Eleven has managed to decrease electricity use in its store operations by an estimated 21 percent, according to a press release from the company. The retailer was able to achieve this through installing LED lighting, energy management systems and high-efficiency HVAC units.

"As the convenience retail leader, we're proud to be setting an example in maximizing energy efficiency and sustainability," said 7-Eleven President and CEO Joe DePinto. "Over the past seven years, we've invested in capital improvements in our stores saving 458,000 megawatt hours each year and reducing our energy footprint.

"This is good for the environment, and it's good for our bottom line. We're committed to continuing this work, and we're honored to accept this award from the Alliance to Save Energy," DePinto added.

The Alliance to Save Energy has been recognizing energy-efficiency innovators for 25 years. 7-Eleven and its fellow winners will be celebrated during a dinner in Washington, D.C., Sept. 14.

Based in Irving, 7-Eleven operates, franchises or licenses more than 63,000 stores in 18 countries, including 10,900 in North America.
