7-Eleven is the largest convenience store chain in the U.S. Through its corporate office, licensees and affiliates, it operates a total of 36,700 convenience stores worldwide. The company plans to convert its U.S. company-operated stores into franchised operations by 2012. Besides adding new franchisees and converting other retailers to the 7-Eleven flag, the company also stepped up acquisitions â even getting involved, although futilely, in the highly-publicized takeover battle over Iowa-based Casey's General Stores. Recent acquisitions have included Quarles Petroleum, Fredericksburg, Va. (14 stores in July 2010); Mother Hubbard Inc., Moline, Ill. (16 stores in February 2010); and White Hen Pantry of New England, Norwood, Mass. (December 2009).
