Beer & Wine to Be Part of Amazon Go's Merchandise Mix
SEATTLE — Online giant Amazon.com’s convenience store pilot, Amazon Go, may be in the process of hiring an employee to check IDs.
The e-commerce giant confirmed that it plans to sell beer and wine at its pilot c-store in Seattle, reported Recode. The confirmation came after an inquiry was made about a flyer posted on the store’s window that mentioned its application for a liquor license.
"When we start offering beer and wine, there will be an associate checking identification," an Amazon spokesperson wrote in an email.
The 1,800-square-foot c-store uses "Just Walk Out Technology" to allow customers to walk in, pick out items and walk out without hitting a checkout area via a virtual cart. It features ready-to-eat meals and snacks prepared by on-site chefs or local bakeries, in addition to essentials like bread and milk, CSNews Online previously reported.
Amazon Go, located on the ground floor of one of Amazon’s new office towers on 7th Ave., is expected to open to the public in early 2017. Currently, it is restricted to employee visits only.
According to Recode, from the outside looking in, Amazon Go appears "to have a bit of a feel of Pret A Manger sandwich shops — with sandwiches, salads and breakfast items lined up on shelves facing out into an open-concept store."
