Big Y Buys Everybody's

4/30/2014

Big Y Foods Inc. has signed an agreement to acquire Everybody's Market, in Cheshire Conn. Everybody's, a family-owned local landmark, will remain open until the deal closes on June 12.

The 33,200-square-foot store will then close for a week while it's cleaned, upgraded, refurbished and restocked with fresh food and Big Y's private label products. Among the changes will be new signs and shelf labels, and the replacement of all front end registers and computers. The renovated store is expected to be up and running on Thursday, June 19.

All current Everybody's Market employees, as well as any other interested applicants, can apply for employment with Springfield, Mass.-based Big Y, which estimates that it will need 135 part- and full-time employees at the store.

While job seekers should first complete their applications online, Big Y has opened a hiring site at Everybody's Market Plaza at 1027 South Main Street in Cheshire. The hiring site will remain open through May 17, unless all positions are filled before then.

Big Y's Everybody’s Market

Managed by veteran Big Y Store Director Mike Dirienzo, the location will be rebranded Big Y's Everybody’s Market.

Although customers won’t see significant changes to the market to begin with, there will be some added enhancements to the product offerings, according to Big Y, among them the company's World Classic Trading Company Deli Meats, Big Y All Natural Angus Beef, Air Chilled Big Y Smart Chicken and almost daily deliveries of fresh seafood from local waters, along with many fruits and vegetables sourced from area farms during the growing season of May through October.

Big Y, which has operated stores in Connecticut since 1984, currently operates 31 locations in the state. The family-owned independent grocer has a total of 62 stores in Connecticut and Massachusetts, with more than 10,000 employees.
