Casey's VP Named Citizen of the Year

ANKENY, Iowa -- Mike Richardson, vice president of marketing for Casey's General Stores, was honored this week by the Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Chamber of Commerce as its Citizen of the Year, the Des Moines Register reported.

"I was certainly thrilled that someone would think that of me, but it was a total surprise," he said of the award, which was presented Monday at the chamber's annual dinner.

Richardson, 53, moved to Pleasant Hill in 2000. In an effort to get more involved in his hometown, he graduated from the inaugural 2007 Pleasant Hill Citizens Academy; has served on the Pleasant Hill Park and Recreation Commission; and also helped to narrow a list of potential sites for a new sports complex planned in the city. He took out papers to run for mayor in the November election, but said work obligations likely would have interfered too much with the demands of the office.

Richardson, who has three children and four grandchildren, has been a Casey's employee for more than 30 years, since before doughnuts were even an option at the chain's convenience stores. "I was 22 when I started there, and as we continued to grow, there was always room for advancement," he told the newspaper.

Richardson attended high school at Stuart-Menlo High School in Stuart, Iowa, and then studied at Des Moines Area Community College. He lived in Bondurant and Altoona, Iowa, before settling in Pleasant Hill with his wife, Patty.

"We have the closeness to all the amenities that would come with a big city, but yet we have more of a neighborhood feel here," he said of the Pleasant Hill community.
