Familiar Industry Names on Fortune 500 List

NEW YORK -- Convenience store retailers and the companies they do business with have once again made a strong showing on the 2014 Fortune 500 list of largest U.S. companies by revenue.

The list, which was released Monday morning, features Marathon Petroleum Corp. at No. 25, Global Partners at No. 146, Murphy USA Inc. at No. 175, CST Brands Inc. at No. 266, TravelCenters of America at No. 339, The Pantry Inc. at No. 371, Casey's General Stores Inc. at No. 389, and Susser Holdings Corp. at No. 439.

Both CST Brands and Murphy USA are new to the annual ranking, having been recently spun off from Valero Energy Corp. and Murphy Oil Corp., respectively.

Oil and energy giants with direct ties to the c-store industry on this year's list include Exxon Mobil Corp. at No. 2, Chevron Corp. at No. 3, Phillips 66 at No. 6, Valero Energy Corp. at No. 25, ConocoPhillips at No. 47, Energy Transfer Equity LP at No. 54, CHS Inc. at No. 62, Tesoro Corp. at No. 75, Hess Corp. at No. 84, Chesapeake Energy at No. 163 and Murphy Oil Corp. at No. 470.

The 2014 Fortune 500 list also features several prominent convenience channel suppliers, such as PepsiCo Inc. at No. 43, The Coca-Cola Co. at No. 58, Mondelez International Inc. at No. 89, Tyson Foods Inc. at No. 93, Kraft Foods Group Inc. at No. 156, General Mills Inc. at No. 159, Core-Mark Holding Co. Inc. at No. 346, The Hershey Co. at No. 366, and Dr Pepper Snapple Group at No. 430.

All three Big Tobacco companies also make an appearance on the list: The Altria Group Inc. at No. 161, Reynolds American Inc. at No. 329 and Lorillard Inc. at No. 496. Lorillard returned to this year's list after being absent last year.

According to Fortune, companies are ranked by total revenues for their respective fiscal years. Included in the survey are companies that are incorporated in the United States, operate in the U.S. and file financial statements with a government agency.
