Fiery Morning for Corporate Kum & Go

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- A fire broke out at the Kum & Go corporate headquarters, located here, Friday morning, causing firefighters to respond and leaving the building without power, the Des Moines Register reported.

Some employees in the building, located at 6400 Westown Parkway, at 5:40 a.m. on Friday noticed smoke and flames coming from an electrical room at the Southwest corner of the building.

Officials told the Register that the fire was contained to a room that housed generators and electrical panels for the office building. The building has a sprinkler system, which was activated by the fire and kept the flames from spreading outside the room, according to Mike Whitsell of the West Des Moines fire department.

"The sprinklers are there for a reason and they did exactly what they are designed to do," Whitsell told the paper. "That was very, very good."

Because the fire was contained, it caused only minor structural damage, although smoke spread through the building, the report stated. The electrical panel suffered the most damage, and the building remained without power, the report stated.

There are no reports of injuries, and as of Friday, firefighters were investigating cause of the fire, the Register reported.
