Giant Eagle Gives fuelperks! to Citizens Bank Customers

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- O’Hara-based Giant Eagle is partnering with Citizens Bank to enable the bank’s customers to generate a few more cents per gallon off their fill-ups at Giant Eagle-owned GetGo convenience store locations, according to a report in The Pittsburg Business Times.

Giant Eagle already counts Citizens as a partner as the grocer’s in-store bank, with 55 branch locations in the 97 supermarkets, but now will give bank members an additional 3 cents off for each $50 they spend in Giant Eagle stores using their Advantage cards and Citizens Bank debit cards, the report stated. Currently, Giant Eagle Advantage card users generate 10 cents off per gallon for every $50 they spend.

"With the holiday season fast approaching, we hope this new way to save on fuel will be welcome news to help our customers stretch their shopping dollars further," Brett Merrell, Giant Eagle’s senior vice president of marketing, said in the report. "The more customers use their Citizens Bank debit card for all their purchases, the faster the fuel discounts add up."

Additionally, Giant Eagle expanded its fuelperks! program last month into a new e-commerce venture called fuelperksmall.com, which allowed shoppers to buy gift cards from a wide variety of retailers, generating savings on gas for doing so, according to the report.

The company also offers advantage card users to generate I cent off per gallon for each drink they buy in GetGo stores.

Ralph J. Papa, chairman of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania, sees the promotion as a way to "make a real difference in the everyday lives of our customers," he said in the report.

Giant Eagle started testing the program in Westmoreland County last year, and rolled it out system-wide last week, The Pittsburg Business Times reported. Citizens Bank will launch an advertising campaign to promote it as well.
