GPM Acquires Illinois’ Jiffi Stop Chain
RICHMOND, Va. — GPM Investments LLC continues to branch out, acquiring 20 Jiffi Stop convenience stores from Smith Oil Co.
According to The State Journal Register, employees were told Sept. 2 they would be transferred to GPM. This comes despite Smith Oil filing a “mass layoff” notice for 230 workers with the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. However, those involved with the situation called this filing only a “technicality.”
“As far as I know, they’ve agreed to retain everyone,” Jim Windsor, manager of the Jiffi Stop Clear Lake Avenue location in Springfield, Ill., told the news outlet.
In addition to purchase the stores, GPM acquiring the Jiffi Stop name, the news source reported.
In recent months, GPM has expanded far beyond its Richmond roots. The subsidiary of Israeli c-store operator Petro Group Ltd. now operates more than 800 stores in 17 states. The company operates or supplies stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Calls placed by The Register to GPM and Pittsfield, Ill.-based Smith Oil were not returned.
