Marathon Ashland Petroleum Adds President

Gary R. Heminger has been tabbed as president of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC (MAP), said Thomas Usher, chairman and CEO of USX Marathon Group said yesterday. He will succeed John Surma Jr., who was named assistant to the USX chairman. Both moves are effective Sept. 1.

Usher credited Surma, who had been president of MAP's retail arm before being named MAP president in 2000, with providing invaluable service to the creation and operation of MAP throughout the company's first three years.

"And, in Gary Heminger," Usher said, "we have another executive whose breadth of experience and considerable leadership skills will chart MAP's success in the years ahead." Heminger's progression within MAP and Marathon Oil Co. made him a natural choice for the position, he added.

Heminger, a 26-year veteran with Marathon Oil, also is a member of the American Petroleum Institute (API) and a former board member and chairman of the Owners Committee for the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port LLC.

MAP, owned 62 percent by Marathon Oil Company and 38 percent by Ashland Inc., is the nation's fifth largest refiner with 935,000 barrels-per-day capacity in its seven-refinery system. The company maintains a retail marketing network of approximately 5,400 convenience stores in 21 states.
