Moms Choose BP
LOS ANGELES -- BP plc's Arco subsidiary has been named by Working Mothers magazine one of the "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers."
Arco operates more than 1,000 am/pm convenience stores in California and a refinery in Carson, Calif.,
While a number of BP's heritage companies and entities have previously been recognized by Working Mothers, the 2002 ranking marks the first time BP has been recognized as one of the top 100 companies in the 17 years that the magazine has published its annual list. With more than 42,000 employees, BP is the only energy company on this year's list.
"BP America has long recognized the importance and value of making our company a great place for working mothers, and we are truly honored to receive this recognition from Working Mothers magazine," said Emily Deakins, general manager of group diversity and inclusion for BP. "Particularly in today's challenging times, finding the right balance between work and family is not always easy. But BP America is committed to developing and implementing programs and policies that make BP one of the very best places to work."
BP provides a range of flexible and useful programs that help its employees, including working mothers, best manage their total work and family obligations. These include schedules, which allow employees to work 80 hours over nine days, creating flexibility to handle personal and family business; and job sharing, in which mothers in transition to or from maternity can team up to handle a given position on a part-time basis. Other options include telecommuting to relieve some part of regular long commutes, and educational benefits to help employees better themselves by taking advantage of educational opportunities.
"Not only are these types of programs helpful to our employees, we are confident that they make excellent business sense for the company," Deakins said. "Working mothers and other employees who are balanced, adjusted and on top of their life situations are in position to make their best contributions to the success of the company."
