Montauk 7-Eleven Earns Title of Highest-Grossing Store
MONTAUK, N.Y. -- Location means everything. When it comes to operating a 7-Eleven convenience store, that location is Montauk, N.Y.
The town, located at the eastern tip of Long Island, is home to 7-Eleven's Inc.'s highest-grossing store last year. According to the New York Post, franchisee Chris Stephens and a spokesperson for the Dallas-based chain would not reveal how much money the store, located at 653 Montauk Highway, brought in last year. But Stephens estimated his gross is in the "low millions" annually.
The store sells $100,000 worth of beer and $50,000 in coffee every month. Additionally, customers purchase between 500 and 800 Slurpees per day.
The store really hits its stride in summer months, when tourists flock the area to enjoy nearby beaches. "Every week [in summer], it starts all over again," Stephens told The Post. "It's like a whole new group needs beach umbrellas, lawn chairs, suntan lotion, and on and on."
In addition to all the common items carried at 7-Eleven c-stores, the Montauk location also sold 250 boogie boards last summer.
The 7-Eleven in Montauk is not the only location in the area having success. Three other stores in Suffolk County — where Montauk is located — also have seen gangbuster sales. In fact, 7-Eleven's top-four grossing stores are all located in the county, with stores in East Patchogue, Southampton and Farmingville following Montauk, respectively.
7-Eleven Inc. has approximately 7,800 locations nationwide.
