SAN RAMON, Calif.--Chevron Corp. announced that Charles R. Williamson, an executive vice president at the company and the former chairman and chief executive at Unocal Corp., will retire effective Dec. 1.

Williamson joined Union Oil Co. of California (Unocal) as a research scientist in 1977. He served on Unocal's board of directors from 2000 to August 2005 and was chairman of the board from 2001 to 2005.

San Ramon's Chevron bought Unocal earlier this year for $17 billion. Williamson's retirement had been expected.

"I am pleased to have contributed to this important transaction," Williamson said in a statement. "I leave knowing there is strong leadership in place and many exciting opportunities for Unocal's highly skilled employees who are now part of Chevron."
