Piedmont Natural Gas Opens Milestone CNG Station

ANDERSON, S.C. — Piedmont Natural Gas Co. Inc. opened its first compressed natural gas (CNG) refueling station located at an existing convenience store.

On Sept. 3, Piedmont opened the station at a Spinx c-store located at 1207 SC Highway 28 Bypass in Anderson. During its grand-opening event, U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C., 3rd District) joined executives from Piedmont and The Spinx Co., where they witnessed refueling demonstrations with several types of vehicles.

CNG is touted to be locally produced, more environmentally friendly and cheaper at the pump compared to traditional petroleum. During the grand-opening event, CNG sold for $1.80 per gas gallon equivalent.

“Piedmont Natural Gas is excited about partnering with Spinx to serve the growing number of companies and fleet vehicles using CNG,” said Karl Newlin, senior vice president and chief financial officer for Piedmont Natural Gas. “More businesses are choosing natural gas because it is an economical and environmentally responsible alternative to gasoline and other transportation fuels. Providing greater access to this abundant, low-cost energy source is an important part of Piedmont’s larger commitment to growing CNG as an alternative transportation fuel.”

Spinx has been a leader in providing innovative fueling options to its customers since 1972, added Stewart Spinks, founder and chairman of The Spinx Co. “The CNG fuel option is an important new choice for fleet operators and individual motorists who appreciate the benefits of natural gas,” he said. “We are committed to continuing our leadership in this area and are especially proud of our new partnership with Piedmont Natural Gas.”

Piedmont Natural Gas now operates 10 CNG refueling stations in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The Charlotte, N.C.–based company is primarily engaged in the distribution of natural gas to more than 1 million residential, commercial, industrial and power generation utility customers.

Greenville, S.C.-based The Spinx Co. operates 80 convenience stores in South Carolina.
