Refinery Threat Proves Bogus

PASADENA, Texas -- Uncorroborated threats to refineries in the cities of Pasadena in California and Texas proved false, according to the the San Antonio Express-News.

The FBI received information last weekend about a threat to Pasadena oil refineries from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India. In response, the FBI initially contacted officials in Pasadena, Calif., but that city's nearest refinery is about 35 miles away, said Anne Cearlock, an FBI agent in Houston.

Since Pasadena, Texas, has one refinery and another straddling the Houston city limits, it was alerted as well. Pasadena Mayor John Manlove said security measures throughout the city have increased since the Sept. 11 attacks, and Friday's threat didn't change the city's normal business day.

FBI officials in California and Texas reported no suspicious activity, but said they would remain on heightened alert for unusual activities in the area of the refineries.
