Safeway Expands Fuel Rewards to BP, ARCO and Additional Safeway Sites
PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Retail grocer Safeway Inc. expanded its fuel discount program called PowerPump Rewards to bring gas savings to a wider range of customers across the U.S., the company stated. As part of the expansion. every Safeway fuel station is now participating in PowerPump and, through a special partnership with BP, customers can also redeem savings at participating BP and ARCO stations.
"The customer response to PowerPump has been tremendous," Diane Dietz, Safeway executive vice president and chief marketing officer, said in a statement. "By partnering with BP and ARCO, we have dramatically extended the opportunities for customers to accumulate savings on gas, whether or not their neighborhood Safeway has a fuel center."
Introduced in select markets earlier this year, PowerPump allows Safeway Club cardholders to earn a 10-cent per gallon discount on fuel for every $100 spent in the grocer’s stores, the company stated. Under the expansion, each $100 accumulated in Safeway stores can be redeemed for a $1.50 reward towards a fuel purchase at a BP or ARCO station, which is automatically loaded onto a reward card once the $100 is reached, according to the company.
"We are delighted to use the BP/ARCO network of more than 11,000 convenient fuel stations as a redemption outlet for the PowerPump Rewards Program," Kevin Phelan, senior vice president of marketing for BP Products North America, said in a statement.
Nearly every purchase, including eligible gift cards and prescriptions, count toward rewards. For every second prescription filled, customers earn an additional 10-cent per gallon discount at Safeway fuel centers or $1.50 discount on a fuel purchase at BP or ARCO stations. In addition. customers who choose to use their fuel reward through Jan. 3, 2009, will be asked if they would like to use or save their reward. Customers who defer the reward will still earn an automatic three-cent reward when they use the Club Card at the pump.
