Sheetz Cited by EPA

WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has cited Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz Inc. for violating federal and state regulations regarding underground fuel tanks at two of its gas and convenience stores in Winchester, reported the Associated Press.

According to the EPA, Sheetz failed to immediately investigate and report suspected fuel tank leaks at its stores on Valley Avenue and Route 7 in 2000 and 2001.

In addition, officials say Sheetz failed to conduct monthly leak detection monitoring at its store on Valley Avenue several times in 2001.

The EPA is seeking a fine of nearly $33,000.

In other Sheetz new, CSNews reported Friday that company officials with Wheeling, Va.-based Coronet Foods, the supplier of produce to Sheetz during the company’s salmonella outbreak in July, said late Thursday afternoon that the company closed its doors.

Company officials said the action was taken as a consequence of the sudden reduction in volume Coronet experienced following the salmonella incident.
