Sheetz Hosts Charity Golf Classic
ALTOONA, Pa. -- Former National Football League heavyweights Jerry Rice, Jerome Bettis, Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Jack Lambert will attend this year's eighth annual Sheetz Family Christmas "For the Kidz" Golf Classic. The event, which raises money for children in need during the holiday season, will be held at Firestone Country Club, located in Akron, Ohio, on June 25-26.
The Salvation Army selects families within communities where Sheetz's c-stores are located and store employees buy presents for the children, which are then distributed at a holiday party in December.
"We're a business that was founded on the principle of giving back. We believe that our emphasis on helping take care of the communities we serve is a large part of our success," Louie Sheetz, executive vice president of marketing, said in a written statement.
The golf fundraiser started in 1992 in Blair County, Pa., where Sheetz employees raised money for needy families for the holidays. Last year, the Sheetz Family Christmas program raised more than $350,000 for 3,800 children in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and North Carolina. To date, more than $3.9 million has been raised, helping 29,000 children.
"Every year this golf outing grows and raises more money than the last. It's because of the thoughtfulness and hard work of our employees, the kindness of our vendors and the generosity of our communities and friends that we have been able to continue this unique tradition," said Sheetz.
Other celebrity guest golfers will include NFL stars Jack Ham, Andy Russell and Al Jenkins; Major League Baseball's Lou Brock, Bill Mazeroski, Kent Tekulve, Steve Blass and Dave Guisti; ESPN anchor John Anderson; and PGA golfer Larry Laoretti.
