Starbucks Testing Carbonated Drinks

NEW YORK -- Starbucks Corp. may be getting "Fizzio" in the future, according to a trademark application filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. If approved, the name would be used for beverage-making machines and a variety of beverages, including carbonated soft drinks, the Associated Press reported.

The filing is related to the Seattle-based retailer's ongoing soda testing in Atlanta and Austin, Texas, said Starbucks spokesman Zack Hutson. Since June, Starbucks has been testing three flavors: Lemon Ale, Original Ginger Ale and Spiced Root Beer.

Customers at the test locations also have the option to carbonate other drinks for free, including tea and iced coffee.

"So far, the response from customers in the test markets has been positive," Hutson said.
